Vilan is set in a farming area and most residents are engaged in agricultural activities for their livelihood.

Jaffna town is about 14km and the nearest beach at Senthankulam is about 5km. The popular leisure resort of Keerimalai is about 7km from Vilan.

Places of worship
Vilan has two Catholic Churches, the Parish Church of St John the Baptist and St Anthony’s Church.

There are two Hindu Temples in Vilan; the prominent and well known Periyavilan Vinayagar Temple and a smaller Vairavar Temple.

School
Children of the village attend the village primary school, Periyavilan Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School, and for secondary education go to either St Henry’s College or Holy family Convent School in nearby Ilavalai.
